First stanza of hymn by A. C. Ainger
The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.
God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year,
God is working his purpose out and the time is drawing near;
Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
When the earth will be fill’d with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.
Comment:
This is a prediction that mankind will begin to see that war is a negative approach to the acquisition of peace and security; that violence breeds violence. They will begin to see that only friendship with our fellow man – who is our brother of the same Father, God – and with nations, can make the world a safe haven for humanity. And that nations, instead of using the resources of Mother Earth to fashion their weapons for wholesale slaughter and mayhem will beat their swords into ploughshares (tanks into tractors) and their spears (muskets, AK’s, machine guns etc.) into pruning hooks (Agricultural implements). Then as the hymn writer and holy writ predicted: “the earth will be filled with the glory of G od as the waters cover the sea”
The complete hymn can be found in the Standard Edition of hymns, Ancient and Modern. for use in the services of the Church.
