THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

QUOTES BY MARK TWAIN

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American humorist, Satirist, lecturer and writer. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

  • “Your faith is what you believe, not what you know.”
  • “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” –
  • “Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.”
  • “With ignorance and arrogance, success is assured. “
  • “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect.”
  • “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” “”There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.”
  • “The reason why truth is so much stranger than fiction is that there is no requirement for it to be consistent.”
  • “The reason we hold truth in such respect is because we have so little opportunity to get familiar with it.”
  • “The holy passion of Friendship is of so sweet and steady and loyal and enduring a nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked to lend money.”

  1. Patanjali Ramlall said,

One of the few notables who predicted his own death, Samuel Clemens was quoted to have said one year before his demise,
“I came in with Haley’s comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, (1910,)and I expect to go out with it.”

He lived up to his prophecy, (or died with it.) He was one of America’s great humorist, and continues to be an enduring literary figure.

” Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect”
The “Majority” is always the ruling class, regardless of number,* so be careful of what they propagate.

*Majority can be less in number, but with fire power behind them. Sometimes force decides who is the Majority, think of Myanmar, and Zimbabwe, presently. AND the Apartheid regime of South Africa, two decades ago.

What about police states all around the world in so-called Democratic countries? Samuel Clemens was also a great thinker.

  2. Thanks Pat for your response. You are well informed in many things. I like your responses and I am happy to have you as a regular visitor.
