THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Posted by randallbutisingh on February 29, 2008

The instinctive Bee, our teacher of industry and diligence, and the  indispensable friend of the farmer, is being threatened with extinction by the activities of intellectual man, the apex of  God’s creation, who, through greed for short time gains, is polluting the environment with noxious chemicals sprayed in the air.  Yet those who are promising to bring change, and alleviate  suffering, rant about the economy, and terrorism. and ignore the possibility of starvation if this trend should continue.

The plunge into unprovoked warfare by a born again christian has opened a Pandora’s Box and also landed the nation into a quagmire; now this violation of nature is threatening our very survival as a species..

Thought from FLASHES OF LIGHT

In the eyes of God, every human being has the same intrinsic and potential value - a child of God and an inheritor of the Kingdom of Heaven.

SUNSET AT THE NORTH POLE

SUNSET AT THE NORTH POLE

A scene you will probably never get to see.

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point. You also see the sun below the moon. An amazing photo and not one easily duplicated. You may want to pass it on to others.sun-moon-northpole.jpg

WHERE THERE IS NO VISION……

Posted by randallbutisingh on January 30, 2008

WHERE THERE IS NO VISION……

There is a good deal of optimism among many that somehow God will intervene and change the system of things, but they fail to understand that man without God cannot and God without man will not. If man continues to pump enormous quantities of oil and water from Mother Earth for his manufacturing purposes and to spew enormous volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, to litter its surface with garbage, and to put noxious effluents into its oceans, all for greed and short time enjoyment without thought for the next generation, then he cannot expect a just Providence to come to his aid..

The earth and all therein is the Lord’s, put there for the use of all mankind. If any individual or group wants to claim it and to stake off portions which he calls his own, then there will be conflicts. Most of the wars fought were for claiming or extending territories. If he uses the resources of the earth to manufacture weapons of destruction instead of implements for peaceful purposes, then he is preparing for conflict..

In religion which should be all embracing, man has set boundaries, claiming whose is right and whose is false, hemming himself around in a circle which is exclusive, ignoring that all mankind is one, with the same Divine spark within all; forgetting that the purpose of religion is to unite, not divide, to eliminate prejudice and hate and to show love and compassion.

Where there is no vision, the people perish. Mankind is on the brink of a precipice. His every invention which he claims will add comfort to mankind is bringing him nearer to the brink by hazarding the environment and threatening the safety and privacy of all. Yet man, now, more than ever, fails to see his interrelation, his interconnection and his interdependence. We are all one; no artificial barrier can separate us. The days of high walls and fences are over. What we need now is to extend the hand of friendship to all, to “beat our swords into ploughshares and our spears into pruning hooks.’

There will be conflicts too, if justice is not meted out to all individuals. In this age of information, man is aware of his rights and he will fight injustice everywhere, even at the cost of his life. Dictators and despots will be opposed everywhere. Though they flaunt power, they are prisoners of their own power, and can remain in power, for so long as they have an army to protect them. .

So, what is the present situation! If we escape nuclear devastation, which is a possibility, can we escape the diminishing environment? Without a healthy environment, a good economy or the best health service means nothing, as our very survival is threatened. Man, after endangering and eliminating many species by his indiscretion, has now himself become an endangered species.

AGRICULTURE - “A NOBLE PROFESSION”

Posted by randallbutisingh on November 17, 2007

AGRICULTURE - “A NOBLE PROFESSION”

This article was written for the press around 1958, I was then a teacher at various schools on the East Coast of Demerara in British Guiana (Guyana). On December 1, 2007 I will soon be 95 years old, and as I review the sad state of our attitude to agriculture in many countries, I have decided to submit what I wrote some 50 years ago. This article and others  on education will be published on this website. Here is my original article:

If anyone should ask me who do I think is the most important person in the community, I would say: “certainly, the Farmer, and Agriculture a Noble Profession”. I do not deny the importance of Religious Ministry, but as Mahatma Gandhi puts it: “You cannot preach to a hungry man, you have to fulfill his hunger first. Here we see the importance of Agriculture and the indispensability of the Farmer. Without an adequately fed and healthy body, man cannot divert his attention to that aspect of his existence which does not need food, but which is strengthened and immortalized by qualities of mind and character. “Mens sana in corpore sano” is what is needed; an untuned piano cannot produce harmony, even if it is played by the most talented artist. So, there is need for a healthy mind and body for the effective manifestation of Spirit.

The cause for most of the discontent and physical want is, that this vital necessity of mankind is overlooked and the trivial and nonessential given priority. Although food is needed daily and the absence of it would mean starvation and death of the body, individuals and governments fail to stress its importance.

Year after year, droughts and floods devastate crops and frustrate the efforts of the noble band of men and women who, through sun and rain, labour ceaselessly so that mankind may exist. The farmers’ problems should be the problem of everyone.

It is time that the farmer become aware of his importance and the government give every encouragement in fostering this essential aspect of human existence. Everyone cannot be a farmer, but everyone can encourage and appreciate it. Everyone can have a little kitchen garden or even a flower garden as a refreshing hobby. Even the Queen cultivates a flower garden.

Learning the ways of Nature can be spiritually rewarding as one can observe the cooperation between God and man. He can learn that “man without God cannot and God without man will not.”

Education, has made an important stride in this colony (British Guiana) by encouraging Gardening in schools, but much of its success will depend on the attitude of parents and teachers to this subject. Teachers will have to soil their hands along with their pupils in order to stress the dignity of labour and awaken interest in the potential providers of the future. Agriculture should also be made compulsory in the curriculum of Secondary Schools.

If right sense of values is cultivated, and pupils could become so interested that they will begin their own little kitchen garden at home, we can be sure that British Guiana will produce a stronger, more self reliant and better citizen for the future.

MAN BELONGS TO THE LAND AND NOT THE LAND TO MAN

Posted by randallbutisingh on November 6, 2007

MAN BELONGS TO THE LAND AND NOT THE LAND TO MAN

When greedy man realises that he belongs to the land and not the land to him; when he ceases to build fences and walls and set up obstacles to shut out his fellow man and begin to share his God-given gifts and talents, the earth will be a paradise, for the earth is the Lord’s and all that is therein.

Fences can be broken down and barriers surmounted by a stronger enemy, so it is best for him to build bridges of Friendship to reach all mankind, for all mankind is one and humanity is indivisible.

Knowing this, it behooves us then to protect the land. The Aborigines of Australia will never cut down a tree, no matter how great is his need; but civilized man will cut down forests, destroy the land and pollute the rivers so as to get gold and diamonds, things which are not necessary for our survival, but which satisfy his greed and the vanity of man.

The Resources of Mother Nature

Posted by randallbutisingh on October 27, 2007

The Resources of Mother Nature

The Resources of Mother Nature are there for all God’s children. We are all given our individual talents to use, to share and to serve one another, so that no one will be neglected and none go hungry. The farmer, the fisherman, the scavenger, should all be given the same respect as the minister of religion, the doctor of medicine, the lawyer, the merchant, for all are God’s children and all are dependent on one another for their sustenance in one way or the other.

To pile up wealth which is the bounty of the Creator and not to use it creatively and productly for the common good, is as Satya Sai Baba says: like storing up compost in one spot and not scattering it in the fields to make it fertile and produce. The late Mahatma Gandhi said; “He that has much of this world’s goods and sees his brother in want and does not help him is a thief.” This principle applies to individual as well as to nations.

We are all God’s children, inheritors of His kingdom. He makes the sun to shine and the rain to fall on every one, the just and the unjust. We should learn from the ants and the bees. See how they toil together for their communities. They do not war among themselves. Alas for man, the apex of creation, made in the image of his Creator, with intellect and the power of discrimination; endowed with freewill; has the capacity for goodness and compassion, but obsessed with greed and lust for power, uses every measure, even the taking of the lives of his fellowmen and the destruction of his environment to accomplish his desire.

We came into this world with nothing; and after a short stay we leave naked as we came; we can take nothing with us; all are equal in the dust. But, in the final reckoning all will have to give account for the use of their talents.

As we sow, so shall we reap.

TWO LOOMING CRISES

Posted by randallbutisingh on October 25, 2007

There are two looming crises which threaten to destroy civilisation and which needs to be given attention if we are to survive as human beings and if life is to continue on earth. If we continue to bury our heads as the proverbial ostrich in the sand, and ignore the writing on the wall, then we are preparing for imminent annihilation. I am referring here to the diminishing life-sustaining environment and the attacks by terrorists.

The environment should be given top priority. We are living in a small planet, a literal grain of sand in the immensity of the cosmos, the only planet discovered by scientists, so far, which supports life. If the source is cut from which all life comes, every animate being will cease to exist.

Nature , with its inexorable laws provide the environment to preserve and sustain life. Man is a component of Nature and needs , like the other components to work in harmony for survival. He is the only being that is endowed with a consciousness superior to other beings. He also has a free will and intuition to see beyond the comprehensible and realize his source of being.

Because of these endowments, man can create, invent and discover the unlimited potential of Nature and Spirit. He can use his talents for making the world a better place, or he, because of his greed, selfishness and lust for power unbalance Nature and create disharmony.

If the environment is not healthy, regardless of how good the economy and the standard of living for all, the quality of life is at stake. If millions of gallons of oil and billions of gallons of water are pumped out of the earth every day, would not there be as a consequence more frequent earthquakes, landslides and other natural disasters? And if the emissions of carbon dioxide is continuously spewed into the atmosphere, would there not be pollution to this vital life support? If we continue to cut down our forests, the lungs of the earth, and dump harmful chemicals in our seas, rivers and lakes, endangering aquatic life and the food chain, no matter how good the economy, life is endangered.

These are only a few of the dangers I have mentioned. What about the widening ozone layer, the melting Arctic snow, acid rain and the danger of radiation. With the diminishing and deteriorating environment, what if the economy is booming?

Where there is no vision, the people perish. Where there is no wise leadership, the many must suffer because of the mistakes of the few. But it is said: “The people get the government they deserve.’ and so long as the people are not properly educated and are stuffed with information which hinders their thinking and originality, their survival and that of the environment are at stake.

Coming events cast their shadows before them. Humanity is at the brink of a precipice. Man has the capacity to reverse the trend, but will he heed the writing on the wall.
